Prefabricated Branch Cable (YFD) | Factory-Moulded Branch Joints

Prefabricated branch cable joint with moulded branch body

§01 — WHAT IT IS

Prefabricated branch cable: the branch joint is made in the factory, not on the site.

Prefabricated branch cable (YFD / YFDZ) is a feeder cable with premoulded branch joints fitted at fixed intervals along the main cable. The main conductor continues uninterrupted through the joint; the branch conductor is crimped to it and the whole assembly is re-insulated and re-sheathed in the factory under controlled conditions. On site the electrician only has to land the branches — no jointing, no heat-shrink work, no fire-watch permit at height.

The alternative is making branch joints on the building face: a tray scaffold, an open flame or a crimping press, and a joint whose quality depends on whoever made it that morning. A factory joint is made once per design, tested, and then repeated identically for every floor.

FACTORY

Made once, repeated identically

Branch positions are fixed from the floor plan. Every joint gets the same crimp, the same insulation and the same mould, then a routine test before dispatch.

SITE

Landing only, no jointing

The electrician lands the branch into the distribution board. No conductor work at height, no hot work permit, no weather window to wait for.

§02 — WHERE IT EARNS ITS COST

High-rise risers and commercial feeders.

AplicaciónWhy prefabricated branch wins
High-rise residential risersOne main cable from the switchboard to the roof, with a branch at each floor’s distribution board. Site jointing on every landing disappears.
Shopping centres and towersLong vertical runs with many tap-offs; the moulded joint keeps the route straight through the riser shaft.
Industrial plantsFeeder to several process buildings from one run, branches landed at each intake.
Infrastructure and metroConstrained shafts and walkways where site jointing space and fire-watch are hard to arrange.

The saving is not in the cable price. It is in the site hours, the scaffold time and the test reports that no longer depend on weather or access.

§03 — CONSTRUCTION

What is actually inside the moulded joint.

Main cableYJV / YJV22 XLPE insulated power cable, 0.6/1 kV, copper or aluminium conductor, per IEC 60502-1.
Branch connectorC-type crimp sleeve, pressed with a calibrated tool; pull-out and resistance checked per joint batch.
Branch insulationXLPE or PVC, matched to the main insulation and rated for the same continuous operating temperature.
Outer mouldInjected elastomer body, weather- and UV-resistant; IP68 when installed and sealed as specified.
Branch cableSame insulation system as the main, sized per the floor load, length made to the plan.

§04 — ORDERING DATA WE NEED

Six lines and we can quote it.

  • Main cable: type, cores, conductor material and cross-section (e.g. YJV 4×120)
  • Branch cross-sections and the number of branches
  • Branch positions: floor by floor, measured from the switchboard end
  • Branch direction and length of each branch tail
  • Main cable total length and drum lengths
  • Destination port and any project standard the joints must satisfy

Send the riser diagram if you have it. A PDF sketch with floor heights is enough — we convert it into a joint schedule for your approval before production.

§05 — FAQ

Is the joint as reliable as the cable itself?

The joint is tested as part of the finished cable: conductor continuity, insulation resistance and a voltage withstand on the assembly. The crimp is made with a calibrated press and the mould is the same for every branch of that design, so the repeatability is the point.

Can branches be added later on site?

Not on a prefabricated cable — the positions are fixed at production. If the riser design is still moving, order the main cable plain and joint on site, or wait until the floor plan is frozen.

Which main cable types can carry branch joints?

Single-core and multicore 0.6/1 kV XLPE cable, armoured or unarmoured. Armoured types carry the branch outside the armour layer, with the mould sealing over it.

How are they packed and delivered?

On timber or steel-timber drums to the ordered length, with the branch tails dressed and labelled per floor. Drum cards list every branch position so the site crew can check before hoisting.
